SHORT TERM

Design & Research process / User & Society

Goal 2: Field research

Why I like to learn how to quickly set-up a field research and to apply new related methodologies or strategies I do not know of? For example, it might be interesting to learn how to conduct a series of workshops or something similar. Methods I like to learn for example are co-design and ‘’affinity wall.

  • After the Course ‘’ Constructive design research’’ I have applied (a) NEW field research method(s).

  • Writing an article on field research, this will be handed in at the end of the course.

Expertise areas: Design & Research process

Goal 3: Writing/reporting on an academic level

Why I still think I have a lot to learn about how to write a solid academic paper. Despite the fact that I have written a lot of papers during my pre-masters and my bachelor's. A small side note is that I have dyslexia, which means I read a little bit slower than the ‘average’ student and find writing in a general bit more difficult. From my own experience, I know the best way to ‘overcome’ this is to keep writing and reading on daily basis.

  • Documenting according to academic guidelines, by literally checking the guidelines and asking for review and feedback. The people I would ask for help would be squad members, tutors, and experts. The results will all be written inconsistent ‘minutes of meetings’. • Learn how to make decisions based on academic literature. Understanding the different libraries/databases and knowing how to use them and filtering the irrelevant information.

  • Applying different design- and research methods. The course ‘Constructive design research’, can be very valuable here. Within this course, I chose the direction of ‘’Field’’, a direction where the documentation of the findings is crucial. How much time this will take depends on the project’s content.

  • During my Health project about Diabetic feet and the course ‘Constructive design research I will be documenting, making decisions, and using design- and research methods on a weekly basis. • With Studio Silver we are planning to write a Conference Paper on the design research project I did last semester. Lu Yuan asked us (me and Wisse) to be a part of this, which is a great opportunity to have my first publications and to work on my writing skills aside from the educational courses.

LONG TERM

Within my master's, I like to focus on the expertise areas of User & Society, Creativity & aesthetics, and Technology & Realization.

Creativity and Aesthetics / Technology and Realization

This expertise area is something I definitely do not want to let go of, it’s an area I love to work on. I just like to make things more appealing. But, it’s also an area I have mostly practiced behind my computer. However, therefore I like to explore how to make my concepts more physical and tangible. It would for example be useful to learn new environmental relation techniques, like light, heath, or sounds.

User & society / Creativity and Aesthetics

I want to explore further how creative solutions can be a great influence in the field of behavior change, on a societal as well as a personal level. Therefore, I am interested to learn about the following subjects; behaviour human change, ethics and philosophy, critical design, and psychology. The M12 project could be an opportunity to explore these areas. Therefore, I will try to aim for more qualitative design research. A research method I am very interested in is Co-design. Thereby, I would like to understand how to measure the effect of an installation in a scientific manner.

The squad and final master project are still unknown.

Expertise areas: Creativity & Aesthetics, Technology & Realization

Goals 1: Design by doing

Why I am very eager to take a step further than I normally do. I am a very conceptual-driven designer, something I love the most. But, I want to take these concepts to the next phase, I want to make the designs tangible and physic. I personally think a concept becomes much stronger when there is a big range and variety of models present before the final shape or prototype. Car brands use their clay models in commercials for a good reason and I like that, it makes it purer. This means I will try to work on a physical model during my Health project. Especially, if you consider I haven’t had the chance yet to do so due to Corona last semester.

  • During the project, I like to see where I can use modelmaking as a method do delve deeper in the nature of the problem. Therefore, I want to use/learn prototype methods I have not used before. I want to do this during my Health project. I probably start modeling during the last phase of the project, around the demo-day.

  • I want to read the book ‘Prototyping and modelmaking for product design’ from the writer Bjarki Hallgrimsson more thoroughly and use it as inspiration, I already looked at all the prototype and modelmaking methods the book has to offer during the first week of my Studio Silver project ideation phase. I will link the methods of the book directly to my project.

  • A key-point of this goal will be collaborating with other students and coaches to work on different aspects of the prototype, like electronics or app design.
